What Breakfast Decides About Three in the Afternoon

The three o'clock dip usually gets settled seven hours before it shows up, at a table that looks a lot like this one.

A bakery sells the bread; what goes beside it is the part the studies keep measuring.

Put the question to a man in his fifties, where does the day go wrong, and the morning is hardly ever his answer. It is three in the afternoon, give or take, when the second wind refuses to show up and the simplest task takes twice as long. The instinct is to fix it at three. The research on breakfast composition suggests the decision was made much earlier, at a table, with a plate that was mostly bread.

Two breakfasts, same calories

The studies that make this point tend to follow the same design. Two groups eat breakfasts of roughly equal size. One plate is built on refined starch and sugar: pastry, white toast, juice. The other keeps some of that but adds a real share of protein, from eggs, yogurt, cheese or beans. Through the morning the two groups look alike. By early afternoon they separate. The starch-and-sugar group reports more hunger, more drowsiness and a stronger pull toward a snack. The protein group, on average, reports a flatter line.

The word to hold onto is average. Not every man in the second group feels better, and some in the first feel fine. The studies describe a pattern across many people, not a promise to one.

Why a baker would say this

It may seem odd for a bread shop to publish a page about eating less bread at breakfast. It is not that. A slice of good dark loaf is on the plate in the photograph above. The point is what sits next to it. Bread on its own is a quick fuel; bread beside eggs and yogurt is a slow one. The difference shows up around the time the afternoon coffee is usually poured.

What the protein seems to do

Protein at the first meal flattens the climb and the drop in blood sugar that a sweet breakfast sets off, and it keeps the stomach busy longer, which turns down the hunger signals that otherwise arrive mid-morning. Researchers also measure the hormones that announce fullness and find them higher after a breakfast with eggs than after one with only toast. That is as far as the science goes, and it is enough to explain the afternoon.

How much is a real share

No figure appears here on purpose. Bodies, appetites and medical situations differ too much for a number on a reading page to be honest. Two eggs, a bowl of plain yogurt, a slice of cheese, a portion of beans: any of these beside the bread puts the plate in the second group. A man who wants a precise target should ask someone who knows his case.

What does not change

A better breakfast will not rescue a night of four hours of sleep, and it will not fix an afternoon that is heavy for reasons a physician should hear about. If the three o'clock dip is new, deeper than it used to be, or arrives together with other changes, that belongs in a consulting room. For the ordinary version of the dip, the one almost every man past forty-five knows, the plate is the first place to look.
